Valor and Public Service

                                                      By The Arbitrary Pointer

The evocative passing of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo ended the standoff of the people who are on the contrasting denomination of life. His death, I could say, is also a judicial mourning of the land. The nation who holds trust from its people seems to have fallen on the ground of ferocious sulfur as its layback also fell from the position holding the highest authority that controlled the peace and order of the country. This is actually what we call ‘surrogated margin.’

I just thought how this man shaped his city and his people when he was still mayor of Naga City. I even imagined how he devoted himself as DILG secretary posing example of good governance. To note, his administration was characterized by honesty, integrity, and empathy for the less fortunate residents of the said place. Thus, he received numerous awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for public service and a United Nations award for his contributions to women’s health and equality.

When the Philippine President Aquino appointed him as DILG secretary, the people seemingly felt shining glimpse of the future especially in crime prevention and other criminality prelusion in the country since he was first known to be a mayor of peace and classified leadership in Naga City.

The death grip of corruption may not be possible if he has not been installed as secretary. I saw this when Dumaguete City flaunted in progress on illegal drug prevention in his leadership. When he visited the province of Negros Oriental, there was actually visible improvement like the reduction of crime rates in the province to name one. Thus, I could say, he is a man dedicated to restoring the good name of government service.

It appears, moreover, that his stay, although permuted shortly, has created positive result in the willful government service. If only a government figure is optimistic and devoted to breaking the chord of poverty in a place, there will really be change in all aspects of human nailing the divine. But sad to say, only a few bathing people have this personality who intently dedicated their life for the people, the community and the country in general.

In the promulgated decency of the land (I am talking here the law), how many of you will proudly say “I have been part of that development, thus I will obey it!” Perhaps, only a few!  Why? Because you let yourself tied of ignorance and money! You see, this seems far out in your mind, but that is actually what the secretary (in the interior and local government) is trying to break and I see it slowly realizing.

I have observed, through his leadership, things that are long been aimed by people which are supposed to be given by the previous leaders in the country who roped the position in a long time. Only him, who have worked below the belt, filtering this conscience and beatitude,  not even  minding pains he may encounter in the road of fiery and fencing battlefield (the politics).

Secretary Jesse Robredo may be gone but he was made immortal by his legacy of good governance. I am hoping that may other people in the land trail his footsteps.  May his bravery, dedication and persistence in fighting the-beyond-intelligence acts of people who are thirsty of political position encourage you to also protect the land and the people.

His passing, I believed is a challenge to all of us to continue his bourn legacy! Sec. Jesse Robredo, you are truly a MAN!

A Change to Ponder

                                                                   Editorial

It is quite impressive to see the Negros Oriental State University administration taking steps that count. The making of the identification cards (IDs) inside the university is yet another move the administration is worth commending. It shows that the administration is indeed looking after the betterment of the studentry.

The Student Affairs Office (SAO) has initiated this progress wherein students need not anymore go outside the campus to have their IDs made. In fact, SAO Director Giovanni Macahig said that they have decided to make IDs inside their office since they now have an ID maker machine, a signature pad, a tripod, a digital camera, and a laptop.

Moreover, Macahig said they have changed the usual process where students are asked to present their load slips, have their photos taken at SAO and have it made at the DBM. The two are literally away from each other and it would be a hassle for the students to go there for processing. He said students this time will only present their load slips and fill up a provided datasheet. After that, they can have their photos taken.

With this, we, the students, have no more excuses to have our IDs made late. We are responsible to secure IDs which serve as our gate pass so that security guards will no longer bar us upon entrance. There will be no more reasons to complain and blame the security guards if we cannot attend our classes because we were not able to get inside the campus.

You see, security guards are just following directives from the administration. In this account, we say they are performing their job well. This calls for a need to cooperate with them and be obedient students to the community.

Since the university did not stop in seeking ways to heighten the level of our educational enhancement, perhaps, we also need to pay back their labor and action.

As responsible students, it is our job to follow directives willfully to avoid hassles and misunderstandings. The SAO told us to have our IDs made earlier because the instruction to disallow students without IDs from entering the campus has been given to the security guards already. It is therefore a clear mandate that we ought to validate our school IDs.

Since we want no conflict and misinterpretation, we need to be keen followers of the promulgated law. After all, the benefit comes back to us. All in all, the improvement of our school can only be made possible if we give our total support and cooperation to the university.

On Land Sovereignty: A Call for Peace Talks and Understanding

                                                     By The Arbitrary Pointer

The Philippines is once again confronted with issues on land ownership dispute. This is not far from last year’s issue on Spratly Island where our country wrestled for constitutional ingenuity. In fact, China recently ordered the Philippines to withdraw claims of owning the Scarborough (or the Panatag) Shoal—known to be a rich natural resource for different fishes and corals, natural gas, minerals, and oil deposits—which is geographically located in the boundary of the West Philippine Sea and the South China Sea.

According to the People’s Government of China (PGC), they [China] should be the ones controlling the island because it is part of their country’s territorial sovereignty. They furthered that if the Philippines will not give the island to them, a possible of war might occur wherein PGC said that they may force to send military men to attack the Philippines if its government will remain hardheaded and unyielding.

On the other hand, the Philippine government insisted that the country is the rightful owner of the island basing on the 200 nautical miles (370 km) of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). It is found in the Philippine constitution, that the EEZ under Presidential Decree No. 1599 issued by President Ferdinand Marcos on June 1978, enables the state to have special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources, including production of energy from water and wind.

The Philippine Coast Guard Patrol Vessel and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources slashed their standoff with the China Sea Bureau of Coast Guard Patrol after two months and one week of deliberate argument, leaving each side in total disagreement. With this, the Philippines’ position on its claim over the Scarborough Shoal is steadfast and irrevocable and that China’s threats would not weaken the Philippines’ spirit.

We have witnessed the misunderstanding of both parties on the local and international news. The media have added fire to the issue after creating hearsays of a possible war between the two parties.

You see, if the conflict continues, our long-aimed partnership, camaraderie and understanding with China will turn to false hopes.

My countrymen, this calls for a great evaluation between the two countries—the Philippines and the Republic of China. Both nations must conduct peace talks and fair negotiations. There must be guiding principles that would limit the claim in each party. There must be friendly discussions that would determine as to who really owns the island. Moreover, every one of them must listen to each side’s explanations so as to gain respect from both parties.

With this, we just hope that they will open their minds and hearts in order to acquire peace and understanding. We hope that China will not have false boasts of its assumed claim of the Scarborough Shoal. And we hope that our government will fight for its rights over the island, over its national treasure.

Of Responsibility and Discipline

For an institution like the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) whose actual training ground for students are held within the country and the scope of engaging in the definite world focuses on local involvement, perhaps holding an on-the-job training (OJT) abroad is a splendid avenue to develop one’s ability better.

Just recently, companies from Malaysia and Singapore, through Southland College Vice President for International Cooperation and Research Vince Sinining and the university president Henry A. Sojor, came up with an idea of sending NORSU engineering and industrial technology students abroad to work, learn and at the same time, earn.

Sinining has chosen Norsunians among other universities and colleges across the country since he found them appearing on national news and topping board examinations. He believes that when students are introduced further to actual job involvement, they will be ready to face the real world in the future.

This development deserves praises for boldly taking higher steps in advancing students’ actual learning experience. If the proposed plan happens, students’ participation on the international field will solicit remarkable margin for future jobs. With this, students must be thankful to the administration, to Sinining and to the companies for giving them the opportunity.

We can say that students are given the chance to enhance their skills which are focused on performing real job tasks but this does not mean that they can learn everything from the training since there are no structured lesson guides on the workplace.

Hence, students must perform well because this opportunity calls for dignity and moral discipline. Students must employ their skills that would improve their knowledge on real-to-life experiences. They must follow proper guidelines set by the company in order for them to acquire necessary learning and to adapt to the environment and last long. More so, they must impose good values so as to sustain delegated objectives, so as when they are given complex tasks, they can accomplish them effectively and efficiently because they have already mastered the routine.

Students who will attend this international job training must value even the simplest thing in the workplace. This would keep them going despite downfalls. When they are given complex rule, they can still manage it since they have already mastered basic tasks on the training. And when they set things at the valuing level, they can achieve what they desire.

Thus, we just hope that they will show what they are capable of in such a way that they can bring NORSU’s name to international prominence and that they will use what they have learned for the common good of the people in general and the university in particular.

Hard work and Diligence matter

Hard work and Diligence matter

An adage goes “pag may tiyaga, may nilaga” (when there’s perseverance, there goes braise) proves to be my inspiration as I find my image together with the rest of the agents of SPi Global-Teleflora all throughout the 2012 mother’s day ramp.

To make it short, my hard work and diligence during the entire duration of the ramp received appropriate rewards. First of all was the 1000-worth of Robinson gift certificates, which I acquired last May 11, 2012. I was conferred such amount because of my enthusiasm in relaying orders, according to the management. (I actually relayed 86 successful orders among others all throughout the night shift.)

Secondly and lastly was the 2000-worth of Robinson grocery items. It was so surreal to make me believed that among the agents; I still maintained the image and evidently received the prize again. And chances truly and randomly come to offer something-success!  Well, I would say the package helped me through physically and financially. I guess it could already defray my needs for a month.

I was so honored to have been chosen as the recipient of these prizes. I was so flabbergasted and flattered to receive such honor. I know it wouldn't be good to be  writing like this, especially when it concerns to describing your own self. Nonetheless, I would take the courage of doing so. This maybe my so surreal worthwhile experience along the summer days..

I also give credits to the people who in one way helped me through to make it. I know this wouldn’t be possible without those people who endured patience in me. To all my colleagues in the team, I dedicate all these to you! Congratulations guys!

Company relations

The ramp has already ended yesterday yet the memories we once had still remained. I can't even forget the laughter and striking words we uttered towards each other to make one laughs. The pieces of advises we once shared have always been my refuge. My friends, my team and my extended family, I wouldn't forget the time we once shared along the way. May you find rest and contentment in your life. I know one day, we will meet again for one reason-to smile and make jokes again. See you at SPi next time.

Annoying Lad and Lass

“I could have pinched them off for their misbehavior during our 'in bound/sales training if I want to, but since we are friends, I won't do it.' You know what I mean? It’s when of a sudden when you're so happy posting something in your blogs about someone whom you've admired of when two of your colleagues in the work place disturbed you and definitely made you frowned for no reasons.”

I know posting something here, won't be a hazed, so I would take that chance to share with you my experience yesterday.  I was quite hesitant to share my blogs to my company in work.  I am shy to let them know that the person I had crush on was our trainer. I just don’t know why but I’m sure there must be something in it that is supposed to be hid from them. But I was left in failure since I had just let them read it and revealed everything to them. They knew it!

It could have been okay, if they had just kept it in their own and fantasize the fact themselves in their own too. But to my surprise, it seems that they are pissing off after revealing it to our trainer. I just said in mind, “their so crap, and hell!” See what I had just said? It’s not my usual word, but they forced me to say it! However, I’m not that guy-typed who puts anger in mind. After an hour, all has gone away and flown like bubbles in air. Anger turns laughter again!

On the other hand, I just don’t know the things around our trainer’s mind all upon knowing the truth in me. But it won’t make me react differently in the next days in the ramp.  I am just bothered because she thinks that I am playing over her image. Well, she just doesn’t know what's the truth!

Few days/weeks more to come and we will end the ramp/ contract. I don’t know where to start and where to end, but one thing is for sure, I am inspired every day to work with her and I seemed to have been chosen in a way! I would consider this experience valuable. So nice to have been flown in the haven of happiness along the way, hopes right things come in place.

My friends, these all I can share with you this time, hope you enjoyed reading and may you find giggles in your own! May your emotions lead you the right way! And  bye bye for now!

More than Paid Training

I think, I am two months away since the last time I visited and posted something in my blogs.  Now, I am posting again something new to share with you my past experiences which I find can be worth-sharing for.

I had my Teleflora training done in three days yesterday. It was tiring yet inspiring. It was so surreal when we had our trainer so kind and beautiful. "Jessie Dolia, do you have any problem?" she called my attention upon staring at her in the middle of the discussion. I can't just help but straightly look at her.
"Nothing miss Kacy, nothing!" I replied in a moderate voice. I seemed to have lost my jaws as I answered her.

"Ok, since we don't know you yet, kindly introduce yourself to us, your school name if you're still studying, your course, your positive and negative experience during the Valentines day ramp and your expectation for this ramp," she said.

At distance deemed to have shown my enthusiasm, I answered in excitement and finally said, "I  am Jessie P. Dolia, studying my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Negros Oriental State University, incoming third year this June. I leave my impression both positive in my experiences and expecting something new this ramp." LOL, I answered in giggle.

As the training went on, we are knowing each other more. I am excited as to what will happen next. I will be anticipating the chance of getting to her more closer as we go on the ramp. Lol, and you also wait my future post okay!

By the way, she's Kacy Espancho. She's the one I'm telling to you.

Hard work really counts

My stay in the The NORSUnian for almost two years now was reasonably fulfilling. From being a newbie for a year to senior writer, challenges had been my very inspiration to do better things though acquainted with the ups and downs both shouldered in my left and right hands. The posture of being a writer and a student at the same time was never been easy and is considered beyond the responsibility of being a casual student.

Remembering those moments somehow dragged and took me to the point of bringing back to mind again when I was still a newbie together with the rest of my batch mates. We were back then naïve and afraid to some top editors in the publication knowing that they possessed respect among themselves that even going inside the TN office was a fear to amongst us. However, it did not last long when we were getting acquainted with them.

Moreover, as the latter went on, sort of comfort and care were developed that they were making us twigs in the publication. Love and understanding overruled the pub that every time we aren’t around, they were looking for us. They seemed to miss us even a single second.

In order to pay them back, we sorted of passing articles as prompt as we can. We passed articles weekly despite the hectic schedules being a student in our own. We make it sure we have articles to present during the meeting. We work hard with dedication and patience. Some received appreciations for being good writers while some remained the same way.

I was also back then like others who passed articles only for commendations. But it changed when I was promoted senior writer. I knew very well that to be a writer higher than others entails bigger responsibility. So, I need to work harder, I need to pass articles to the best of my ability so as to pay back their trust given to me. And fortunately, I have proved them my worth. I have been very diligent in passing news articles, features articles and even columns. They have even awarded me thrice for being best writer. Somehow, this has motivated me to be better, bolder and brave enough to handle jargons from others.

My stay being a senior writer hadn't last long. Today, majority of the staffs have spoken so as new beginning has to be started. From being a senior writer, I am now a News Editor of the official student weekly publication of Negros Oriental State University- The NORSUnian. My felicitations to you guys for the trusts and confidence you have given to me.

I know you are thinking serious this time. So I will tell you, stay calm and just be fascinated with things around the bushes. I know many things have to be corrected and be placed back to its original position. We will do these one by one at right pace of time. And with our collaborative might, together we can make change.

Furthermore, since I will be working and manning new staffs, new publication and new responsibility next school year, it is expected that you will do your best as much as I can. I believed this can only happen through your cooperation.

Since you have voted me as your News Editor, I am expecting big from all of you guys as much as you do. We knew much has to be changed for greater and bolder student leadership and advocacy, so we can. Kudos TN and congratulations!

Be also inspired like me with these statements of R. Shannon and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as we venture together the new school year that is full of challenges and trials fused with new responsibilities.

The ability to keep a cool head in an emergency, maintain poise in the midst of excitement, and to refuse to be stampeded are true marks of leadership. - R. Shannon

The ultimate measure of man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Shortage leads you destruction

Shortage of finances oftentimes makes us bad. It sometimes triggers us to get belongings which are not ours and frighteningly imprisoned us emotionally. It is very painful to hear that some people are still doing these stuffs. Due to this, some are most likely engaging themselves into killings, drug addiction, thievery and etc. We cannot blame them, it is their way of making themselves better in order to survive. We call this survival of the mighty. Generally, many people craved because, according to them, of poverty. It is their opinion, we respect that.

But, what if that shortage is the result of your sluggishness, extravagance and dependence? Would it be a right reason to say that poverty really matters? From the morbid reality, one can still live despite poverty, only if, you have the courage to live and bold enough to make change. When you are determined and industrious, patient and understanding, you can be the best among others.

This reality somehow awaken my thought/opinion because of the incident in our boarding house which took place yesterday evening. To give you full details, let me start this by describing this person.

He was hailed from Bayawan City, a native. He is studying in one of the respected state universities in Negros Oriental, the Negros Oriental State University, also known as NORSU, its popular name. He is a third year Bachelor of Science in Geology student. He always plays DotA and other related gaming recreation today.

I knew him because he was my roommate for almost a year now. He is a christian, a pious leader, a kind  and a motivated person. Because of this he gained respect and trust from all his subordinates, even myself. However, he broke these trusts when he did something unexpected. He betrayed us by getting our money.

Yesterday, around 8:15 in the evening, I, together with the rest my house colleagues, two of which are my roommate went  to Arman's eatery to have our dinner. This person I am talking to you was left alone in the room, lying on his bed and watching  a movie in his laptop. Knowing that we left our pouch and wallets containing big amounts of money, he hurriedly locked the door. We don't mind about it knowing that all is fine. So, we headed directly to our purpose-to have our dinner.

After few minutes, he followed us and also partook his dinner. Afterwards, he went somewhere else we don't exactly know. By the time we were done with our dinner, we went back home. To our surprise, a 1000 peso-bill of my friend Jermel, our roommate, was already gone. And boooops, the money was lost..

We got panicked and disrupted. Jermel almost cried since the amount is for his sister's tuition fee. 'He' was our suspect. Jermel decided to go the police station to blotter the incident and reported the incident.
He called the 'He' and confronted him. But the 'He' denied. "Wala ko gakuha sa imong kwarta, nganu gung akong kuhaun?," he said.

A tactic came to Jermel's mind- a peace talk negotiation. So, he talked with guy in a nice way, asking to return the amount since it is for her sister tuition fee, especially that final examination of his sister is coming. With the peace talk, the guy, returned the money and said: "Dili naku intention nga kuhaun tong kwarta, nahutdan lang ko ug kwarta, wala pa ko padal-e sa akong papa, sorry kaayo," he apologized.

And the problem was solved. They reconciled and pardoned each other.

The guy has not even felt shame of his acts but rather felt easy and lucky as if nothing happened. My respect and trust have also been deteriorated. Now, I am hoping he would not do it again, change and refrain his bad actions that contribute disasters to him.

My point of views: The damage has been done, the reputation has been broken and the trust has been altered. A lesson learned, do not leave your money anymore unattended everywhere and anywhere else so as to protect your belongings.
